Long Island.
Long Island is around 80 miles long and only 4 miles wide at its widest point. The land area is 173 square miles. Long Island is situated about 165 miles southeast of the Bahamian capital of Nassau, which is located on the island of New Providence. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the northern quarter of the island.
The Atlantic Ocean coast, on the east side of Long Island, is noted for its steep rocky headlands, while the Caribbean Sea coast on the west side is noted for its broad white beaches with soft sand. The terrain ranges widely throughout the island, including white flat expanses from which salt is extracted, swamplands, beaches, and sloping, in the north, and low, in the south, hills.
Long Island is particularly noted for its caves, which have played a major role in the island's history. Dean's Blue Hole, located west of Clarence Town, is the world's deepest underwater sinkhole, dropping to a depth of about 660 feet, making it more than double the depth of most other large holes.
Long Island is surrounded by smaller bays and inlets, including the large New Found Harbor west of Deadman's Cay, at approximately the midsection of the island. There are also smaller islands off shore, including Sandy Cay.

Long Island is situated approximately 350 miles from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and 160 miles from Nassau. There are currently two airports on Long Island, Deadman's Cay, which is approximately 40 minutes drive South and Stella Maris, which is less than 10 minutes to the North and benefits from port of entry status. Both offer regular scheduled services to Nassau, a short 50 minute flight and the Bahamas' primary international gateway. Additionally, there are charter companies that offer direct flights to Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Long Island, a remote yet accessible hideaway, Long Island has a wealth of opportunity for the discerning traveller to be as active or relaxed as they choose. Divided by the tropic of Cancer and bordered by two very different coasts, one with rocky cliffs and caves that dip suddenly into the sea, and the other with mile upon mile of calm, empty, sandy beaches. With villages throughout its length which offer bars restaurants and small hotels, Long Island is one of the last of its kind, safe, friendly and truly unspoilt, it's surrounded by some of the world's finest waters for boating and sailing.
With its small, genuinely friendly population anywhere on Long Island is truly peaceful, safe and a sanctuary for nature. The coastline is stunning, with the crashing surf and hidden coves of the Atlantic side contrasting with the empty, sandy beaches on the Caribbean side. The island provides space to escape from the stress of modern life.
